LED: A New Form of Light

An LED is a new form of light source — not a better bulb, but a different kind of device. Where an incandescent heats a wire until it glows and a fluorescent excites gas, a light-emitting diode makes light directly inside a semiconductor. No filament, no gas, no heat-soaked envelope. That single change in physics is the reason LED now lights homes, cars, screens and stadiums.

At VP LED we take that device to its largest expression: an LED video wall is simply a vast array of the same red, green and blue diode clusters, each driven as one pixel. Understanding the LED itself explains why the wall behaves the way it does.

How an LED Makes Light

When current passes through the junction of a semiconductor (typically a gallium-nitride or gallium-arsenide compound), electrons drop to a lower energy state and release the difference as a photon. The material's bandgap sets the colour: the right compound gives red, another gives green, another gives blue, and blue-plus-phosphor gives white. Because the light is generated in the chip, the device is tiny, instant and efficient.

Why "New" Still Matters

  • It is solid-state. Nothing to break, shake loose or burn out the way a filament does.

  • It is efficient by design. Most of the energy becomes light, not heat, so cooling is simpler.

  • It is tiny and addressable. Millions can be placed on a surface and switched independently — the basis of every LED wall.

From One Diode to a Wall

Scale that one diode up to a grid of millions and you have a display. The engineering that follows — sealing the diodes (COB), protecting them (GOB), or packing them tighter (MIP) — is all about making that array brighter, finer and tougher. Our outdoor COB series reaches 4,500–5,000 nits (custom to 14,000 nits) precisely because the underlying diode is so efficient and robust.

Technical Note: From Bandgap to Photon

Equation panel for the article: From Bandgap to Photon - three governing equations with numbering

Equation (1) converts bandgap Eg (eV) into emitted wavelength λg (nm) - 1240 is h·c expressed in those units, which is why red needs a narrow gap and blue a wide one. Equation (2) splits external quantum efficiency into internal efficiency and extraction efficiency; packaging exists to raise the second factor. Equation (3) is the radiative recombination rate, proportional to the product of electron and hole densities n and p with the material coefficient B.
