What does an LED screen cost?

The price of an LED screen is not set by its size — it is set by what has to go inside the panel to hit your brightness, sharpness and durability targets. Two walls of the same square metreage can differ in price by several times depending on pitch and packaging. This guide breaks the cost down so you can see where the money goes and where you can save it.

At VP LED we spec from the installation's real conditions, not from a default menu. Because we run fine pitch in both fixed and rental, and hold 4,500–5,000 nits outdoors (up to 14,000 nits custom), we can usually meet a brief at a coarser, cheaper pitch than a supplier who only sells one line — and we quote a full bill of materials so the price is never a mystery.

The Factors That Drive Price

FactorWhat it changes
Pixel pitchThe biggest lever. Density rises sharply as pitch falls (P0.9 carries roughly eight times the diodes of P2.5), so fine pitch multiplies the per-m² cost. Spec the coarsest pitch your viewing distance allows.
PackagingCOB and MIP carry a premium for their seamless surface and fine-pitch capability; GOB sits between; SMD remains the cost-effective default for the bulk of walls.
BrightnessOutdoor 4,500–5,000 nits needs stronger drivers and COB packaging; indoor 600–1,000 nits is far cheaper. Over-specifying outdoor brightness indoors wastes budget.
Cabinet buildDie-cast aluminium 500×500mm cabinets give tight seams. Rental builds (quick-lock corners, rear service, flight-case tough) cost more than fixed builds but survive touring.
Control & signalSending box, video processor, cabling and redundancy scale with wall size and content complexity.
Size & installLarger, curved or flown structures add rigging and labour, but the per-m² panel price typically falls with volume.

Where Most Budgets Overspend

The common mistake is buying pitch the eye can never use. A wall viewed from eight metres gains nothing from P1.25 over P2.5, yet pays several times more per square metre. We start every quote by fixing the viewing distance, then specifying the coarsest pitch that still meets it — and spending the saving on brightness and build quality instead.

VP LED's Positioning

Because we build P1.2 / P1.5 / P1.9 in both fixed and rental, and outdoor rental at those pitches is something few suppliers offer, a client can standardise one pitch across a permanent lobby and a touring stage — simplifying spares and training, and avoiding duplicate inventories.

Technical Note: Cost Scaling: Diode Count Rules

Equation panel for the article: Cost Scaling: Diode Count Rules - three governing equations with numbering

Equation (1) is the density law driving everything: pixels per square metre rise with the inverse square of pitch. Equation (2) states the cost consequence - price per square metre tracks the diode count, so going from P2.5 to P1.25 roughly quadruples the expensive part of the bill of materials. Equation (3) is total cost of ownership: capital cost plus every year of spares, service and power, which is why build quality at moderate pitch often beats the cheapest fine-pitch quote.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is fine pitch always worth the cost?

Only when viewers stand close. Beyond the pixel-fusion distance the extra resolution is invisible, so the premium is wasted. Match pitch to viewing distance first.

Why does outdoor cost more than indoor?

Daylight readability demands 4,500–5,000 nits plus sealed, rugged packaging (our outdoor COB series), which costs more than a 600–1,000 nits indoor panel of the same pitch.

What is the lifespan I am paying for?

A wall's service life depends far more on its environment than on any single number — heat, humidity, dust and daily running hours all play a part. COB and GOB packaging help by protecting the diodes from moisture and impact, and good cooling with front-service access keeps a wall healthy for longer.
